Dehydration of Sugar:     GO BACK

Sugar and Sulfuric Acid    Sulfuric acid added to sugar               

C6H12O6(s)  +   H2SO4(aq) -->  6 H2O(g)  +  6 C(s)
     sugar      +     sulfuric acid   -->    water (steam)   +  carbon

As sugar is dehydrated, a column of carbon is produced.

Sugar becomes dehydrated leaving only carbon
